Dear Hueneme ESD Community,

This Thursday, August 25th, Hueneme Elementary School District welcomes students back for the first day of the 2022-23 school year and the beginning of HESD’s Sesquicentennial celebration, 150 years of educating students in our community.  We are looking forward to a great year with exceptional learning experiences that support the academic and social emotional success of all students.

A few updates as we embark on the 2022-23 school year:

COVID-19 Guidance FAQ

On June 30, 2022, The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued the COVID-19 Public Health Guidance for K–12 Schools to Support Safe In-Person Learning, 2022–2023 School Year.

A Frequently Asked Questions document  has been compiled to address questions based on the updated CDPH guidance. Families are encouraged to review this information prior to the start of the school.  The FAQ, along with other resources, are available on the district COVID-19 Information page.

New After School Enrichments Opportunities

The new Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) provides funding for after school enrichment programs.  This year’s enrichment programs will include things such as: Art Trek, cooking & nutrition, mariachi, musical theater, sewing, do-it-yourself (DIY) projects, dance and Chem Kidz.  Most of these enrichment programs will be offered in seven week sessions.  Year-long mariachi and musical theater programs will be offered at E.O. Green and Blackstock Junior High Schools.  Enrichment classes will be available at all eleven HESD school sites.

We are also pleased to share that plans are underway for a full time after school program to be added at Hollywood Beach School for grades K-6, beginning October 3rd.  Beach is currently the only school in our district that does not have an ASES after school program.  We are working with a local community partner to offer a similar program at Beach.

Arts Education

All schools will have access to art education this year during the regular school day.  Through partnerships with Art Trek, HipHip Mindset, Dance for Wellness, Breathe and our own HESD music teachers, we are working to increase visual and performing arts opportunities for students.

Free Meals for All

Breakfast and lunch will be available to all students free of charge.  Although all students will be able to receive free meals, families will be asked to complete the Household Income form, which is part of the first day packet.  This form impacts funding for the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) and a variety of other resources.  By completing this form it ensures that our schools and families receive all available resources.  The Household Income form should be returned to the school office.

Measure B - Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and Fire Alarm Construction

Our campuses continue to be upgraded thanks to the voter approved school facilities bond, Measure B.  New HVAC and fire alarm systems are now up and running at the “Round I” schools, Williams, Haycox and Hathaway.  Construction started on the “Round 2” schools, E.O. Green, Hueneme and Sunkist, during last school year and continued through the summer.  Green is close to being finished, but global supply chain issues have caused a delay for some critical pieces of equipment for Sunkist and Hueneme.  Construction on the “Round 3” schools, Blackstock, Larsen and Parkview, will begin this school year followed by the “Round 4” schools, Bard and Beach. We look forward to all of our classrooms and facilities having a temperature controlled comfortable learning environment.

Universal Prekindergarten/Transitional Kindergarten

Universal Prekindergarten/Transitional Kindergarten (UPK/TK)  was expanded to include all four year old children.   UPK/TK is now being offered at Bard, Hueneme, Parkview, Sunkist, Larsen, Haycox, and Williams.  Melissa Staley is our new Early Education Specialist.  If you have any questions about UPK/TK, please contact her at mstaley@hueneme.org

Fewer Combination/Split Grade Classes

The 2022-23 California State Budget included the new Learning Recovery Emergency Block Grant.  With the addition of these new one time funds, HESD was able to reduce the number of combination or split grade classes throughout the district.

We are looking forward to a great 2022-23 school year!

Sincerely,

 Dr. Christine Walker, Superintendent
